Colombia is known for its biodiversity, and especially when it comes to birds! The avian biodiversity of the country covers about 20% of all bird species that can be found in the world. More specifically, we are talking about a bit less than 2000 species, which doesn’t even include the migratory birds that can found throughout specific times of the year.

This tour of the National Aviary of Colombia near Cartagena is ideal for those who love birds, birdwatchers, or people who just love nature. You will be picked-up in your hotel and driven to the Aviary that is located on a peninsula near Cartagena called Barú. This is a drive of about 1 hour near the coastline and through little villages.

Once you have arrived you will notice that the Aviary did a tremendous job in making the place as pleasant as possible for both birds and visitors. The Aviary covers a huge area and the cages are large-scale and walk-in so it doesn’t feel too much like a zoo and it allows closer contact with the birds.

Furthermore, as Colombia has different ecosystems that all come with their typical animal inhabitants, the Aviary has done its best to simulate the 4 most important ecosystems.
