The Pacific Coast of Colombia is something special! It is some of the most remote and jungle-like regions of the country. This coastline is located on the westside of Colombia and stretches all the way from the north, the border with Panama, to the south where it ends at the border with Ecuador.
The inland is characterized by jungle, mangroves, and swamps. This comes as no surprise as the area is some of the most humid ones in the whole world thanks to an average precipitation of 4000 mm (160 inches) per year.
Nature thrives here and the biodiversity is enormous. The area is home to many national parks, of which Gorgona island might be the most infamous one, as it used to be a prison! Probably the most special animal species you will be able to witness at the Pacific Coast are the humpback whales.
Every year around July they arrive to the warm and shallow waters of the Colombian Pacific coast, especially the northern parts, to give birth and subsequently teach their young how to fish, breathe and maintain their buoyance.
Additionally, you can find most of Colombia’s Afro-Colombian population living here. However, there are also numerous little indigenous settlements.
