Red Howler Monkey in Casanare

Day 1 – WELCOME TO YOUR CASANARE TOUR!

 

On the first day of your Casanare adventure you will be met by our driver in the arrival hall of Yopal´s airport. Your first destination is the amazing Vereda Altagracia in Reserva Buenaventura.

 

Depending on the weather conditions, it will take around 7 hours over a bumpy gravel-like road to get to IBA (Important Birding Area) Vereda Altagracia where your hotel Buenaventura is located and where you will spend the next days. The drive will be made in a comfortable SUV that is adapted to the local roads.

 

Before getting to your accommodation, you will make a stop in the town of Trinidad to have a typical lunch before continuing towards the plains, where you will have more than enough chances to spot amazing birds and other wildlife. Keep your eyes open and binoculars and cameras ready!

 

Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by the owners, who are local farmers, and have a delicious traditional dinner.

 

Your basic, but typical accommodation is located in the middle of nowhere so you will be spending the next days in pristine nature.

Day 2 – LOOK AT ALL THESE ANIMALS!

 

Today your day starts early in the morning in order to have good chances of spotting more wildlife.

 

Before breakfast, you will go bird and wildlife watching in a nearby area where it is common to spot giant anteaters.

 

When you are back in the hotel, you will have breakfast and re-charge your energies for the rest of the day.

 

After breakfast, you can choose to go on a Jeep Safari through the plains, go for another hike in the area or take a canoe trip on a nearby lake. All of them are great ways to spot plenty of wildlife.

 

In the afternoon, you will go to a natural place called El Lagunazo, to enjoy the sunset. The sunsets of this area are famous for its amazing colors. Enjoying it while being surrounded by hundreds of ducks, capibaras, wild pigs and birds, is an unforgettable experience.

Day 3 – TRANSPORT TO HATO MATEPALMA

 

You will start the day with a typical breakfast in the hotel. Keep your eyes open for the many birds, family of howler monkeys, anteaters, and caimans.

 

You will be able to choose between a jeep safari (which allows you to go further and you are a bit better protected against the rain in case it isn’t the best weather), go by feet to some areas you haven’t discovered yet.  Or make a canoe safari because capibaras and caimans are usually on the shores of the river.

 

The surrounding trees are home to howler monkeys and plenty of birds. If you are lucky, you might also be able to spot otters or an anaconda.

 

Take in all the beautiful sights and sounds because after this you will set course to Hato Matepalma, which is another gorgeous nature reserve located at a drive of about 4 hours where you will spend the next 2 nights.

Day 4 – HATO MATEPALMA AND ITS GORGEOUS SURROUNDINGS!

 

You will start the day with a typical breakfast in the hotel. Keep your ears and eyes open for the many birds living in the area, just like the hundreds of capibaras who are used to live close to the ranch.

 

In the morning you will have the same options as the day before. You  can choose between a jeep safari (which allows you to go further and you are a bit better protected against the rain in case it isn’t the best weather), go by feet to some nearby areas. Or make a canoe safari.

 

In the afternoon, it is time to go horseback riding like the real Colombian cowboys. You will make a tour of a couple of hours over the plains. It is known that a puma lives in the area and anteaters have been spotted running over the fields.

Casanare 5 days

Day 5 – LIFE OF A LLANERO COWBOY!

 

First, you will start the day with a typical breakfast in the hotel. Keep your eyes open for the many birds, family of howler monkeys, anteaters, and caimans.

 

The goal of this day is to visit a typical cowboy ranch and learn more about the Llanero culture of Casanare. The drive to the traditional ranch will take around 2 to 3 hours. You will be welcomed by El Llanerazo, your local guide on this trip. He will show you around on the farm and introduce you to his self-made museum of Llanero culture.

 

El Llanerazo found some rare archaeological objects in the area and some archaeologists are trying to figure out to who and what culture they belonged to.  He will also show and explain tools and ways of how the cowboys live and work now, and in the past.

 

You will be served a typical lunch on the ranch while being surrounded by the noises of monkeys and birds. El Llanerazo will also demonstrate different cowboy skills and show you how he crosses a deep river with this horse.

 

Don´t hesitate to discover the surroundings of the farm as well. It is known that howler monkeys live in the area and you might be able to spot rare birds.

 

Finally, you will be brought back to Yopal so you can catch your next flight.
