Discover one of the most amazing ecosystems in the world, a Paramo. Let yourself be amazed by its unique nature and landscapes.

Colombia is home to a unique ecosystem that can only be found in 5 countries all over the world as it needs a minimum altitude of 3000 meters above sea level and a tropical environment. This ecosystem is called ‘paramo’, and can best be described as tropical tundra.

It is of essential importance as it is one of the main sources to provide water to the earth. The typical vegetation is made to absorb as much humidity and liquids from the passing clouds as possible. This water makes it way through the roots of these plants and so little rivers of freshwater are created that come down the mountains.

Chingaza Natural park is one of the most stunning paramó’s in Colombia and located right next to Bogota.

There are several hiking trails which will allow you to hike through the special vegetation and bring you to the best spots to have wonderful views over the mountains and its hidden lakes. If you are lucky you might be able to spot some wildlife like the Andean bear, felines, and endemic birds.

A local guide, who is native to the region, works closely with Parque Nacionales, and who is very knowledgeable about the paramo’s typical flora and fauna, and traditions maintained by the locals who inhabit the area, will guide you on this hike.

Together you will hike for about 3 hours and your goal will be a lagoon called Laguna de Buitrago. Afterwards you will be treated to a hot drink and have the opportunity to change into other clothes if needed.

Then it will be time to return to Bogota and give your feet a rest from the hike at high altitude!
