The Amazon region appeals to the imagination of many! It is remote, wild and mysterious. This is no different for the part of the Amazon Jungle that lays on Colombian territory. It covers the whole south-east tip, making it the largest natural region of the country.
But being the largest region doesn´t mean it is densely populated, on the contrary, it is extremely little inhabited. This is a great characteristic as it leaves more room for the lush green nature and fascinating fauna of the area.
Thanks to its location around the Amazon region it is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. Humidity levels are high, as well as precipitation levels. However, there is a clearly distinct dry and wet season noticeable throughout the year. Sometimes you can only get to places by canoe or motorboat, which are the most widely used ways of transportation in the Amazon Jungle.
This also means that the jungle is not that accessible from other places in the country. Leticia, the region´s capital and biggest city, is only reachable by air from Medellin or Bogota. If you come from Peru or Brazil, you can try to embark on a long boat trip that brings you in the country over the many tributary streams of the Amazon river.
Most of the people living in the Amazon region belong to indigenous communities that used to live more isolated from civilization. They still follow their ancient traditions and practice local rituals. We can still learn a lot from their medicinal knowledge of the many tropical plants, trees, and fruits.
Other inhabitants descend from settlers who originally came looking for gold or work on the rubber plantations. But besides the humans, you will mostly hear and observe captivating wildlife that is so defining for the jungle.
