These are the most famous Colombian flowers in the world
Why is Colombia one of the most biodiverse countries on earth? The answer: its geography. Colombia is on the Equator, which means it experiences little seasonal variation and temperatures remain the same year-round. As a result of its stable weather, a lot of commodities grow throughout the year. Colombian flowers are one of these and have become an important symbol of the culture.
These conditions, together with clay-rich soils and the perfect amount of rainfall, make Colombia the second largest flower exporter. The flowers reach countries as far away as the United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Japan, UK, Australia, among others. “There are 130,000 Colombians working in floriculture, and Colombia exports more than 6 billion stems each year to a total of 90 countries” (Washingtonpost.com, 2018).
But it is the United States which is the biggest market for Colombian flowers. Currently, 80% of all cut flowers imported to the US come from Colombia. It is with no surprise that Valentine’s Day is the peak of the year for flower growers. In the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day, almost 30 cargo planes make the trip to Miami daily, each carrying 1.1 million flowers – mostly roses. The proximity of the country might have something to do with this.
What are the most popular Colombian flowers around the world?
Colombia has more than 130,000 different plant species and more than 7,000 cultivated hectares of flowers. The following are the most desired Colombian flowers in the world:
1. Roses
This flower tops the list in the international market. Colombia produces around 1,400 different species all year round, but the Freedom rose is the most popular abroad. It is bright red and lasts up to two weeks in a vase of water. Its petals are also used in food recipes, especially in Colombian desserts. As a symbol of love, people send bouquets on special occasions such as Valentine’s Day, anniversaries and birthdays.
2. Orchids
Colombia has the largest number of species of orchids in the world: more than 4,000 in total, of which1,572 are endemic. Hence, it was declared the national flower in 1936 and since then it has been a big part of the Colombian culture. You can find orchids in almost every region of the country, because they grow in any weather conditions. However, Cundinamarca, Antioquia, Boyacá and Caldas are home to half of the species. These flowers are a great gift for any occasion. But you should check the meaning of the colors to be even more on point with you present.
3. Carnations
Carnations grown in Colombia have an international reputation for their quality, beauty, and longevity. Therefore, carnations make up 12% of all flower exports. Most of the production is located outside Bogotá, where crops get 12 hours of light every day of the year. They also have a wide range of colors, but usually people give white and pink carnations for Mother’s Day, because carnations are a symbol of love, gratitude and tenderness.
4. Chrysanthemums
These Colombian flowers are highly appreciated abroad because they are affordable, and they last longer than others. Growers in Antioquia and Cundinamarca can grow chrysanthemums throughout the year as a result of stable temperatures. Their variety of tones make them perfect for beautiful floral arrangements, using the same flower but in different colors. In the United States, people use this flower as a symbol of joy and to congratulate someone on their accomplishments.
Where should I go to appreciate Colombian flowers?
Literally anywhere you go, you can find places to buy the most beautiful Colombian flowers. And as expected, the prices in local markets are way cheaper than in America: you can buy a dozen flowers for between COP$3.000 and COP$7.000 (between USD$1 and USD$3). They might not be export quality, but they are still colorful and bright.
Cundinamarca and Antioquia are the regions responsible for 95% of the export-quality flowers and the remaining 5% corresponds to areas such as the coffee triangle and Valle del Cauca. But there are two festivals in the country dedicated to the richness and diversity of Colombian flowers that you should not miss:
1. Madrid, Cundinamarca
Flowers grow in white-tarped greenhouses, which surround this little village, just 20 miles from Bogotá. Consequently, the town hosts a festival where locals create out of this world floral arrangement with different motifs.
2. Medellín, Antioquia
This city hosts the biggest flower festival in the country, bringing thousands of tourists together every single year. The Silleteros Parade is the main attraction. This is when locals show off their ability to create unique pieces of art from flowers. As with any other event in this country, Colombian dances and food are a big part of this traditional party.
The privileged location of the country makes it possible to grow more flowers than you can imagine. Now you know that every time you buy roses, carnations or Chrysanthemums, there is a good chance that they come from Colombia.
