Agrotourism: adventure and education combined
If you think the only way to get to know Colombia’s culture is through food and music, you are missing a big part of the experience. Agrotourism is a growing trend that will let you live an adventure in rural areas, surrounded by nature. Luxury hotels are switched for traditional farms, where locals share a day in their lives with you.
But more than hiking or exploring the vast countryside, this type of tourism invites people to get their hands dirty and join the farmers in their daily chores. Visitors are more than welcome to take part in activities such as the preparation of the land, harvesting and the sale of agricultural products.
Quindío and the coffee zone, in general, is where this practice began more than 20 years ago. Back then, the value of coffee plummeted, so farmers opened up plantations to tourists in order to add another source of income.
Currently, there are other touristic options such as cacao, fruit, flower, and ancestral plant farms. We have selected a few spots that you can start with if you are thinking of exploring agrotourism.
Where to do agrotourism in Colombia
Parque Agroecológico Merecure
It is located only 3 hours from Bogotá and 45 minutes from Villavicencio, on the eastern plains. There is the option of staying in simpler inns that resemble the traditional houses of the area. The property is quite vast and has several lakes, where tourists can go swimming or kayaking. Hiking, bike rides and sport fishing are also available.
But if you want to have an authentic agrotourism experience, you should join the llaneros (Colombian cowboys). They will take you on a horse-ride around the land to show you what a day in their life is like and to show you wildlife in the area – if you are lucky enough to spot it. There are more than 80 species of birds, as well as exotic animals like tapirs, monkeys, capybaras, buffaloes, among others.
Parque Agroecológico Tierra Prometida
This finca is located at the heart of the coffee triangle, in La Nubia, Salento. It is an hour away from one of the most beautiful places in Colombia: Cocora Valley. There is a tropical forest, areas dedicated to growing coffee, the Quindío River, and two water streams.
It is truly a paradise for nature lovers and agrotourism. Besides stunning hikes, visitors can take part in tree planting and other traditional activities related to the coffee culture. The purpose is to make tourists interact with the environment and learn the value of working in the fields.
Centro Agroecológico La Cosmopolitana
This is a 25-hectare property located in the village of Restrepo, Meta, on the eastern plains. It was created to preserve the tropical rainforest ecosystem and endangered species. Also, to raise fish, rabbits, pigs and cattle.
Apart from camping, there is also birdwatching, and other activities related to agrotourism. The farm offers workshops on sustainable farming and agriculture, agroforestry systems and so many other programs for people who really want to learn to live in harmony with the planet.
Parque Agroecológico Guacaica
This place offers adventure, but also a lot of educational activities. It is located in Caldas, in the middle of the coffee landscape, surrounded by mountains. The tours will let you explore waterfalls, water streams, and crops – not only coffee.
Colombia being the country with the highest number of bird species, this park is a haven for birdwatchers, just like Minca. The most popular agrotourism activity in the area is learning how to make panela – an ingredient from the local cuisine.
La Pequeña Granja de Mamá Lulú
Quimbaya, Quindío, offers agrotourism, from traditional farms to sustainable spaces. This place is the perfect destination for those who want to learn how to improve soils, use water responsibly, generate organic fertilizers, and grow food without chemicals.
Visitors also can discover the history and characteristics of the ecosystem, creating awareness about conservation. The small inn, with a capacity for 32 people, guarantees a quiet experience that allows tourists to connect with nature.
Let us be honest, a Colombian vacation without a natural adventure is not a vacation. When you visit a country as diverse as this one, you need to make room to explore hidden treasures. Agrotourism is the way to do it.
