The absolutely stunning Tatacoa Desert is the second largest arid zone in Colombia. It is rich in fossils and the landscapes seem to come from another planet, making it a great tourist destination.
It has two distinctive colors: ocher and gray. It is actually not a desert, but a tropical dry forest.
During the Tertiary Period , it was wetter, with thousands of flowers and trees, but it has been gradually drying up to become a desert. Now the area is heavily eroded and crossed by dry canyons. Because of some rainy periods the landscapes are constanstly changing.
The Tatacoa desert is also possibly the best destination in the Americas for astronomical observations. So, stargaze by night and go on an adventure in the fascination and unique formations of the desert in the daytime!
