You have undoubtedly heard of Colombia´s Caribbean coast. It covers the whole northern slice of Colombia and is adjacent the Caribbean Sea. This is where color, flavor and smell blend into one fantastic tropical vibe.

Many years ago it used to be one of the few entry points of South America. Colonial coastal cities like Cartagena and Santa Marta still show the leftovers of this grandeur and are rich in culture and interesting buildings and museums to visit.

This is also where the slaves where brought from Africa and where the Spaniards discovered many indigenous tribes. As a result of this, the Caribbean Coast is an interesting melting pot of different cultures and nowadays you can hear, see, and taste influences from different origins.

Nevertheless, the Caribbean Coast of Colombia is also known for its paradise beaches of white sand that are dotted with palm trees. This is one of the many reasons why the region is so popular with tourists looking to relax and practice watersports.

But don´t only focus on the beaches and colonial cities. The region is home to a varied set of ecosystems and some of the highest coastal mountains in the world. You can let yourself be surprised by the more inland and mountainous jungles where indigenous tribes still live the way they used to live many years ago.

This territory is an absolute must for birdwatchers as there are a big amount of endemic birds living here. Besides the mountains and the beaches, you will also find swamps and even the desert of Guajira, Colombia’s driest region where the dunes and sand never seem to end!
